CHAPTER ONE
Life began for Johnny Price one stinking hot afternoon at Groganâs Poolroom, late in August. He was nineteen, then, a big, tough kid who had been out of high school for a couple of months, and who had a job running orders for a grocery in town, and whose chief hobby at the moment was making a girl named Beth, who didnât have too much in her top story but who was neatly stacked and who didnât mind coming across.
Johnny didnât like running orders for a grocery store. He didnât like the $50 a week he made, either. He didnât like the lousy nickel and dime tips he got handed, after heâd been sweating and breaking his back to deliver somebodyâs carton of cookies and apple juice.
What the hell, though. He needed a job for the time being. High school hadnât taught him anything worth a damn. He was shrewd and sly when he went in, shrewd and sly when he came out, but he hadnât bothered to pick up any information on quadratic equations or the French Revolution, or even anything that would help him learn a trade.
He didnât want to clutter up his mind with useless things like that.
Johnny Price had big plans for Johnny Price. They involved a lot of money being his, and girls with boobs like swollen melons, and all the good things life had to offer.
And everything started to begin that sweltering day in Groganâs Poolroom.
âTake the afternoon off, Johnny,â Old Man Thompson of the grocery had said, with a big, generous sweep of his hand. âItâs too damn hot to work.â
âGee, thanks,â Johnny said, and he was off.
It was the hottest day Johnny could remember, the hottest day of a hot month. Nobody was coming to the grocery store in this kind of weatherâit was even too hot to eatâand there was nothing at all for him to do. In a sleepy little town like Reesport, New York, you couldnât expect the grocery store to bother with anything like air-conditioning.
Uh-uh. Air-conditioning was a city trick, a newfangled gimmick. Old Man Thompson just didnât believe in it, that was all.
Grogan of Groganâs Poolroom did, though. Not real air-conditioningâthat was carrying things too farâbut a big fan that kept the poolhall pretty clean and fresh during the summer. Johnny made tracks for Groganâs that afternoon. He had ten bucks in his pocket, and that would see him through a couple of hoursâ pool and maybe even some fun in the evening, too.
He had a date with Beth that evening. He knew just how the evening would end, too. With both of them naked, and his hands tight around Bethâs big hard warm breasts, and her legs wrapped around his body, and his belly flat against hers, and him gliding easily to the snug harbor of her body, and the two of them moving and moving and moving still faster until passion overwhelmed them both. It was something to look forward to, anyway.
